Germany has ordered the first 84 RCH155 wheeled howitzers under a US$ 1.4 billion contract awarded to the German company ARTEC GmbH.

According to the Defence Blog, the purchase is part of a framework agreement between ARTEC and the German Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), which provides for the acquisition of up to 500 systems, with deliveries expected between 2027 and 2029.

ARTEC is a joint venture between KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, responsible for the Boxer family of armored vehicles. Under the program, Rheinmetall will supply ARTEC with the electrical systems, software, and 155 mm weapon systems for the RCH155.

The RCH155, short for “Remotely Controlled Howitzer 155 mm,” combines the automatic, remotely operated Artillery Gun Module with the protection and mobility of the wheeled Boxer armored vehicle.

The system is designed to deliver the firepower and range associated with self-propelled artillery while offering greater road mobility and reduced crew requirements.

According to the company, the fully automatic weapon system enables firing on the move — a feature intended to reduce vulnerability during shoot-and-scoot operations. Targets can be accurately engaged at distances of up to 40 kilometers.

The system was also designed for rapid readiness and sustained long-range road operations, reflecting the emphasis on mobility. Thanks to its high level of automation, the RCH155 can be operated by a reduced crew of only two soldiers — a commander and a driver. This design aims to lower personnel needs while maintaining artillery fire capability.
